Club Midi – vineri 12martie2010
In advance of his two performances at Mutek 2009, we call up Berlin to chat up TobiasFreund, a 20-year veteran of electronic music, and the man responsible for some of clubland’s most idiosyncratic hits of the past few years.
Everybody has a day job. It’s what you do *after* that day job that matters. Tobias Freund worked for more than 20 years in a Frankfurt studio that saw the likes of Milli Vanilli and Meat Loaf pass through its doors.
But while he helped engineered—and still likes—some of those records, his true passion lay in electronic music, so once he’d get done cutting up the tape of chart-topping superstars, he’d break out his trusty 808 and get to the work of experimenting as much as he could.
The results are well known: As Sieg Über Die Sonne with Dandy Jack, Freund provided the cooler hand to Martin Schopf’s Latin percussion; as Pink Elln he grew electronic dreamplants on his own. Freund has found his greatest success, however, ever since he left the comfortable environs of a day job in 2003, producing house music with a twist under the name tobias. and experimental work with Max Loderbauer under the name nsi. (Non Standard Institut). The
former has yielded clubland hits like “Street Knowledge” and “I Can’t Fight the Feeling” and has vaulted him to an elite circle of producers that eloquently bridge the gap between head music and body music.
